Solution

My Fireworks is a joint project of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Science & Technology Museum (SSTM). SSTM urgently needs innovative outreach to attract visitors even though its exhibit renewal rate is low.

Based on the concept of STEAM education, combined with AR technology, a service design provides an innovative solution for visiting the SSTM. Preserving the original exhibits, in the exhibition users are guided to collect materials for fireworks experiments, where the fireworks created are kept and promoted as virtual souvenirs.

The

low renewal rate

of exhibits doesn't attract new and existing visitors
There is currently

no online exhibition guide

on mobile for SSTM
The value of

science education

in SSTM is not fully exploited

Background

Shanghai Science and Technology Museum was built by the Shanghai government to implement the strategy of

rejuvenating China through science and education

and opened it to the public in 2001.
It is about to receive its first major closure in 20 years. Its

need to be solved urgently.

Research Question 1 - How to help SSTM attract audiences?

pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic

4

Comparing the top 3 science and technology museums in China in terms of exhibit format,

SSTM is heavily homogenized.

The exhibits in SSTM are

mainly static exhibits

, with few interactive ones.

Exhibits are less interactive

, and

display methods

are outdated and have not been updated for a long time. The update rate is less than

10%

(including repairs and upgrades).
According to the ticket tracking,

primary and secondary school students and their companions

are the major audience group of SSTM. After research, three types of

persona

were designed.

Research Question 2 - How to help SSTM expand online?

pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic pic

The existing online platform is not very functional and lacks exhibition presentations, especially on mobile.

A

Journey map

was created based on the users's preferences and habits when visiting SSTM.

It is inefficient to have functions scattered across mobile and web.

SSTM doesn't offer any mobile functionalities during the visit.

Compared with improving the facilities, exhibits, and display formats,

the mobile platform

can be exploited for exhibition viewing and promotion.
SSTM can provide

official and targeted routes

to the exhibition for the main visitor groups, such as school children.
The visitor's connection to SSTM can

go beyond

the existing souvenir format and become

more innovative and easy to promote

KEY INSIGHT

Appealing virtual tour programs need to be designed to meet the need for online promotion and a lasting connection to SSTM.

We used the KJ method to induce design opportunity points.

We sorted out the stakeholders involved in the design concept of combining a virtual visit to help enhance the audience experience and connection with SSTM.

Users download the app by scanning the posters posted in SSTM.

Visitors get informed about the story, inspiring them to visit the exhibition.

Users scan the exhibit index via phones to fulfill the tasks in the app.

After scanning, users view the 3D model in the Imaging space.

After collecting materials, users create fireworks and can record sounds.

Users scan QR codes on actual souvenirs to view the hybrid ones and share them.

Feedback

It was interesting. However, it is a bit inconvenient to keep operating the phone screen. Is there an easier way to use it?

My firework

attracts a large number of visitors. Do such hybrid souvenirs have to
